Who makes Kirkland golf clubs? And who makes Strata?

Kirkland golf clubs have come from contract factories, and SM Global LLC is the company on most of their USGA listings. The USGA's equipment database names SM Global, LLC for the Kirkland Signature Wedge (Version 2), a Kirkland Signature Forged wedge, the Kirkland Signature driver and a Kirkland Signature iron listing. The first Kirkland wedges, in 2020, were listed under Southern California Design Company. US import records show one club factory, Zhongshan Licheng Sports Equipment in Zhongshan, China, shipping Kirkland Signature wedges to SM Global, and Kirkland Signature seven-piece iron sets to Costco Wholesale Canada and another importer in 2025.

Strata is a different story: it is Callaway's brand. Callaway bought it with Top-Flite in 2003 and sells Strata complete sets on its own site. We found no public record that names the factory that makes current Strata sets.

01Every Kirkland club, and who is on record for it

Costco moved from balls into clubs after the 2016 ball sold out. GolfWRX reported in August 2020 that the KS1 putter was Costco's first club, followed by a three-wedge set. The table pulls together what is on record for each product as of October 22, 2026.

Item 1740556 in those records is the item number Costco uses for its Kirkland Signature 7-piece Players Iron Set, which lists a True Temper Elevate 115 steel shaft and Lamkin Crossline 360 grips.

02What the import records show, and don't

SM Global, in Los Angeles, is the importer on most of the Kirkland golf records we found. Its ImportYeti profile lists Zhongshan Licheng Sports Equipment as a supplier with 16 shipments, with descriptions that include "golf club Kirkland Signature wedge". HS code 9506.31 is the customs code for complete golf clubs.

ImportGenius lists 41 shipments from Zhongshan Licheng in all, to seven importers. The latest it shows went to:

  • Costco Wholesale Canada, March 2025: "golf club/iron, item 1740556, Kirkland Signature".
  • B-TI Global, an importer with a Belize address, May 2025: three containers of "golf club Kirkland Signature playiron set 7pcs regular (#4 to #P)", 2,200 and 2,880 sets per container.
  • SM Global, most recently March 2022.

What they don't show: the records place Zhongshan Licheng in Zhongshan, Guangdong, but we could not confirm the company from a website or catalog of its own. Records also can't tell you who designed the clubs, whether heads were forged or cast there, or who supplies the driver. Factories sometimes ship goods made by a partner, and HS codes are sometimes wrong, so a shipper name is a lead you verify, not a final answer.

The USGA lists answer a narrower question. A listing names the company that submitted the club. For Kirkland that has been Southern California Design Company (2020 wedges) and then SM Global, LLC, which also stands behind every Kirkland ball on the conforming ball list. Neither is a factory name.

03Who makes Strata golf clubs?

Strata is owned by Callaway. When Callaway agreed in 2003 to buy the assets of the bankrupt Top-Flite Golf Company, the deal included "the Top-Flite, Strata and Ben Hogan brands" (Golf Business News, July 1, 2003). Today Callaway sells Strata complete sets on callawaygolf.com: men's 12, 14 and 16 piece sets and women's 11, 14 and 16 piece sets.

What we couldn't find is the factory. Callaway's site doesn't name one, Strata sets don't appear on the USGA lists we searched, and we found no public import record that names Strata in its description. Without a dated record, we don't name one. When we find a dated record, we'll add it here.

So the honest answer: Callaway is the brand behind Strata, and the factory is not on the public record.

04How to judge a store-brand or entry-level set

The factory name tells you less about a club than the specs do. Before buying a Kirkland or Strata club:

  • Read the spec sheet. Head material (cast 8620 carbon steel, forged, stainless), shaft model and weight, grip. Costco names the shaft and grip; that is more useful than a rumor about the factory.
  • Check the USGA list. A new "Version" means a changed design, even under the same name.
  • Check lofts and lie. Budget sets often have strong lofts. Compare them with the set you play now.
  • Look for a fitting option. Store sets usually come in one length and lie. If you are tall or short, budget for an adjustment.

None of these tell you who made a head. All of them tell you whether it suits you.

05How to get your own golf clubs made

Kirkland shows the usual route for a brand without a factory: a design (from a design firm or the factory's catalog), a contract club maker that casts or forges heads, and an operator that handles assembly, packaging and freight.

  1. Start with one club. Wedges and putters are the common first products. Drivers take more engineering and conformance testing.
  2. Find factories that ship complete clubs. Search import records under HS 9506.31 (complete clubs) and 9506.39 (heads and parts), then verify each shipper before you message it.
  3. Ask for their tooling. Most club factories have existing head designs you can customize with your own finish and stamping. A fully new head is a bigger project.
  4. Submit to the USGA early if you want your clubs to be legal for competition.

06A note on these records

Brand to factory connections here are historical. Zhongshan Licheng Sports Equipment has shipped Kirkland Signature clubs at the dates shown. That doesn't make it Costco's current, only or authorized club supplier. ProductGods is not affiliated with Costco, Kirkland Signature, SM Global, Callaway, Strata or any factory named.
