How to choose home decor manufacturers
What to look for in a home decor manufacturer
Ask how the product is actually made. A hand knotted rug, a hand thrown vase and a cast resin lamp have very different lead times, consistency and costs. Handmade work varies piece to piece; decide how much variation your customers will accept.
Ask for photos of current orders, not the catalog. Workshops that make for well known home brands will usually show you work in progress, and that tells you more about quality than any sample made just for you.
- Process: handmade, semi industrial or factory, and what that means for consistency.
- Materials and safety: food safe glazes for tableware, electrical certification for lighting.
- Packaging for fragile goods, and who pays for breakage.
- Home brands they have produced for, shown on the cards.
MOQs and sampling
Artisan workshops often take small orders but need long lead times. Approve a physical sample, keep it as the standard, and inspect against it.
Domestic or overseas
India is a center for rugs, metalwork and handmade decor; Portugal, Denmark and Japan for ceramics; Indonesia and Vietnam for natural fiber and wood. Shipping fragile goods is a big part of landed cost, so price it early.
Questions to ask on the first call
Decor makers range from one family workshop to large export factories. Find out which you are talking to, because it decides capacity, lead time and how much the product will vary.
- Is this made by hand, and how much does each piece vary?
- How many pieces can you make a month, and what is the lead time for my order?
- How do you pack fragile pieces, and who pays for breakage?
- Which tests or certifications apply (food safe glazes, electrical safety)?
