Who makes Super Tech oil?

Super Tech is Walmart's motor oil brand. Walmart's product listings name the company behind it, and the American Petroleum Institute's directory shows who holds the license. Here is what each record says, and what it doesn't.

Walmart's own listings name Highline Warren as the manufacturer for Super Tech motor oil. On October 23, 2026, Walmart.com listings for Super Tech Full Synthetic 5W-30, Super Tech High Mileage Full Synthetic 5W-30 and Super Tech All Mileage Synthetic Blend 5W-30, all sold by Walmart.com itself, gave Highline Warren in their Manufacturer field. Highline Warren is a Memphis, Tennessee automotive fluids company that describes itself as a private label partner with nine manufacturing locations.

The American Petroleum Institute's licensing directory shows something different, and both are true: the API license for Super Tech oils belongs to Walmart, license 0293, first issued September 28, 1993. An API licensee is the company allowed to put API's marks on the bottle. It is not necessarily the company that blends the oil.

What the records don't show: which plant blended a given bottle, whether Highline Warren is the only supplier, or who supplied Super Tech before. Details below.

01What Walmart's listings say

Walmart.com product pages carry a specifications table, and many include a Manufacturer field. On October 23, 2026 we checked Super Tech listings where the seller is Walmart.com (not a marketplace seller):

ListingSellerManufacturer field
Super Tech Full Synthetic SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil, 5 quartsWalmart.comHighline Warren
Super Tech High Mileage Full Synthetic SAE 5W-30, 5 quartsWalmart.comHighline Warren
Super Tech High Mileage Full Synthetic SAE 5W-30, 1 quartWalmart.comHighline Warren
Super Tech All Mileage Synthetic Blend SAE 5W-30, 5 quartsWalmart.comHighline Warren

What this shows: Walmart's own product data, for the listings it sells directly, names Highline Warren as the manufacturer on that date.

What it doesn't show: every viscosity, every size, or every year. We checked four listings. A retailer's data field is also only as current as the last update to the listing, so check the bottle you buy.

02Who Highline Warren is

Highline Warren LLC is based in Memphis, Tennessee. On its own site (checked October 23, 2026) it says it has 9 manufacturing locations and 13 distribution centers, turns out 200 million gallons of automotive fluids a year, and works with more than 130 private label brands. Its retail page calls it "your private label partner" for mass and auto retailers.

That matters for reading the listing. Highline Warren describes itself as a manufacturer and distributor of automotive fluids, so a Manufacturer field naming it is consistent with what the company says it does. Highline Warren's site doesn't name Walmart or Super Tech among its customers, which is normal for private label work.

03What the API license shows

Motor oil that carries the API "donut" or the starburst has to be licensed through the American Petroleum Institute's Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS). Its directory is public at engineoil.api.org and lists each licensee and the brands it licenses.

LicenseeLicenseFirst issuedStatus (October 23, 2026)
Wal*Mart Stores Inc, Bentonville, Arkansas0293September 28, 1993Active, effective April 1, 2026, expires March 31, 2027
Wal-Mart Canada Inc, Mississauga, Ontario0791May 5, 1995Active

The products listed under Walmart's US license carry the brand names SUPER TECH and SuperTech, including conventional, full synthetic and lawn mower oils.

What this shows: Walmart holds the API license for Super Tech in its own name, and has held one since 1993. What it doesn't show: the blender. A retailer can hold the license and contract the blending, which is why the license and the Manufacturer field name different companies.

04What is not known

  • Which plant blended a given bottle. Highline Warren lists nine manufacturing locations; the listings don't say which one.
  • Whether there is more than one supplier. A retailer can split a category between suppliers, and suppliers change. We checked four listings, not the whole range.
  • Who supplied Super Tech before. Some websites name Warren Distribution, Shell or others. We found no dated public record for any earlier supplier, so we don't name one.
  • Whether Super Tech matches any other brand's oil. An API license is about the category an oil is licensed for. It doesn't make two brands the same product.

05How to check your own bottle

  1. Read the back label. Look for "distributed by", "manufactured for" or "blended by" lines and the API service category (for example SP) and ILSAC grade.
  2. Look up the API license. Search the EOLCS directory for the brand name. It shows the licensee and every licensed grade.
  3. Read the retailer's listing. On Walmart.com, the specifications table often includes the Manufacturer field. Check that the seller is Walmart.com, not a marketplace seller.
  4. Note the batch code. If the bottle carries a printed lot or batch code, write it down. The company named on the label can use it to answer questions about that bottle.

This is the same record trail we use to find who makes anything. Our guide on how to find a manufacturer shows it with import records, and private label vs white label explains how a retailer brand like Super Tech gets contracted out. The Product Sourcing Secrets course covers how to find and brief a contract manufacturer for your own product.
