How to choose activewear manufacturers
What to look for in an activewear manufacturer
Performance apparel is a fabric business. The factory needs access to technical knits (stretch, wicking, recycled), and the sewing skills for flatlock seams, bonding and compression fits. A general garment factory often struggles with this.
Some of the factories here are golf and athletic knit specialists that have produced for well known brands; others are general garment factories with a sportswear line. The cards show which brands each has made for, which is the quickest way to tell them apart.
- The fabric mills they work with and the test reports they can show.
- Machines for flatlock, coverstitch and bonded seams.
- Experience with fit testing on real athletes, not just a size chart.
- Brands they have produced for in running, training or golf.
MOQs and sampling
Technical fabrics carry their own minimums, often higher than the sewing factory's. Ask for both and ask about stock fabrics you can use for a first run. Wear test samples hard: wash them, run in them, check pilling and stretch recovery.
Domestic or overseas
Most performance apparel in these records is made in Asia and Peru. Domestic makers exist for small runs and are useful while you lock the fit.
Questions to ask on the first call
Activewear factories that do it well talk about fabric and fit before price. Use the first call to find out whether they test, and how.
- Which mills supply your performance fabrics, and can I see their test reports for stretch, pilling and colorfastness?
- Which seams and finishes do you do in house: flatlock, coverstitch, bonding, laser cut edges?
- How do you grade sizes, and do you fit on real people?
- What stock fabrics can I use to lower the first order minimum?

Questions
Q01What fabrics are used in activewear?
Mostly nylon or polyester knits with spandex for stretch, often recycled. Our materials pages on spandex, nylon and recycled polyester go deeper.
Q02How many samples should I expect for leggings or shorts?
Plan for several rounds. Fit is the hard part in activewear, so budget time for a fit sample, corrections and a pre-production sample in the final fabric.
Q03Where are the factory contacts?
Emails, phone numbers, the person to ask for and our notes on each factory are in The Vault, inside Product Sourcing Secrets.
