How to choose hat manufacturers
What to look for in a hat manufacturer
Hats are their own trade. Crown shape, panel count, brim, closure and the decoration method decide how a cap looks, and a good headwear factory will have dozens of standard shapes to start from.
Some of the makers on this page are US custom shops that decorate and finish hats close to home; others are large overseas headwear factories. Both are useful at different stages, so the country filter is the quickest way to split them.
- Their stock shapes and whether you can modify one or need a new pattern.
- Decoration: embroidery, patches, printing, and what is done in house.
- Materials and trims: fabrics, sweatbands, closures, custom labels.
- Brands they have produced for, shown on the cards with the evidence.
MOQs and sampling
Custom shops in the US decorate existing blanks at low minimums. Fully custom caps (your fabric, shape and labels) are made overseas at higher minimums per color. Get a sample in every colorway you will sell; thread colors read differently on different fabrics.
Domestic or overseas
Start domestic to test designs on blanks, then move proven styles to an overseas headwear factory for your own shapes and better margins.
Questions to ask on the first call
The fastest way to a good hat is to send a hat. Mail the factory a cap whose shape you like, then ask them to match it and change the details. That saves rounds of sketches.
- Which of your stock shapes is closest to my reference hat?
- What decoration do you do in house, and what is sent out?
- Can you make custom labels, sweatbands and closures, and at what minimums?
- How do you pack hats so the crowns are not crushed in transit?
