Who makes Member's Mark dog food?

Sam's Club doesn't publish who makes its Member's Mark pet food. One federal recall names a plant for two recipes. Here is what that record shows, what it doesn't, and how to check the bag you have.

Mid America Pet Food has made Member's Mark dog food, according to a November 9, 2023 FDA recall notice. The company, of Mount Pleasant, Texas, listed "some Member's Mark varieties with Best By Dates before 10/31/24" among the brands "produced at the Mount Pleasant facility", in a recall over possible Salmonella contamination. The FDA and CDC advisory on the recall names two of them: Member's Mark Beef and Brown Rice Recipe and Member's Mark Salmon and Sweet Potato Recipe, both in 30 pound bags.

That is the only public record we found that names a maker for Member's Mark dog food. It covers those recipes with those best-by dates, made at that plant in 2023. It doesn't show who makes the other Member's Mark recipes, the cat food, or anything sold since. Details below, and how to read your own bag.

01What the 2023 recall shows

Mid America Pet Food recalled dog and cat food in stages in 2023. The FDA and CDC advisory says the November recall "expands previous recalls by the firm on September 3, 2023 and October 30, 2023". The November 9 notice is the one that names Member's Mark.

ReasonPotential Salmonella contamination

The company's notice says the recalled brands were "produced at the Mount Pleasant facility", and the FDA's advisory links the recalled food to Mid America Pet Food as its maker. So this record names the plant, not just a distributor.

The recall is reported here as a dated fact. It is not a statement about the quality of Member's Mark dog food today.

02What is not known

  • Who makes other Member's Mark pet food. The recall covers two recipes. Sam's Club sells more, and a store brand can use several suppliers.
  • Who makes it now. The recall is from 2023. Suppliers change, and we found no later record.
  • Whether the other brands in the recall match Member's Mark. Sharing a plant doesn't make two recipes the same. Each brand has its own formula and specification.

Some websites name other pet food companies as Member's Mark makers. We found no recall, filing or company statement behind those claims, so we don't name them.

03How to check your own bag

  1. Read the back of the bag. Look for "manufactured for" or "distributed by" lines, the best-by date and the lot code. The Mid America notice says its best-by date is printed at the middle top of the back of each bag, so check the notice for where to look.
  2. Write down the UPC. Recall notices list UPCs, so you can match a bag to a recall exactly.
  3. Search the FDA's pet food recalls. The FDA keeps a list of animal and veterinary recalls and outbreak advisories. Search the brand name.
  4. Ask the retailer. Give Sam's Club the UPC and lot code if you need to know whether a bag was part of a recall.

04If you want to launch your own pet food brand

Member's Mark works the way most private-label pet food does: the retailer owns the name and the recipe specification, and a pet food plant that already runs batches for other brands produces it. The Mid America recall is a reminder that one plant can produce several brands at once.

If you are building a pet product of your own, start with the private label vs white label guide to decide whether you need your own formula, and read up on quality control inspection before your first production run.
